Travel Smart: Is the Cheapest Fare Really the Best Deal?

As summer begins winding down, I’ve noticed a lot of travelers searching for the lowest airfare they can find. As someone who still works part-time in the airline industry, I see firsthand how often travelers are shopping around for the cheapest fare available.

And listen—I understand. Who doesn’t want to save money?

Shopping around and comparing prices is smart. But there is one thing I would encourage travelers to consider before immediately choosing the lowest price on the screen:

The cheapest fare is not always the best value.

That lower fare may look great on the front end, but depending on the airline and type of ticket you purchase, it may come with additional costs or restrictions.

Before buying, ask yourself what is actually important to you.

Are you checking a bag?

Do you want to choose your seat?

Does sitting toward the front of the aircraft matter to you?

Would you like more flexibility if your travel plans change?

Are you comfortable boarding later, when overhead-bin space may be more limited?

These are small details that people sometimes overlook while focusing only on the ticket price.

A fare that initially costs less may become more expensive once you add baggage, seat selection or other services you want. And some deeply discounted fares may offer less flexibility if you need to change or cancel your trip.

Look at the Total Travel Experience

There is absolutely nothing wrong with choosing the least expensive fare.

If you are traveling light, don’t care where you sit, have firm travel plans and simply want an affordable way to get from one destination to another, that fare may be perfect for you.

But choose it because it fits how you travel, not simply because it was the cheapest number you saw.

Sometimes paying a little more upfront for the things that matter to you can save money—and frustration—later.

So as you search for that last summer getaway or begin thinking ahead to fall and holiday travel, remember:

Don’t just shop for the cheapest fare. Shop for the best value for YOU.
